Bennington College boasts famous alumni such as Michael Pollan

Michael Pollan, award-winning author of several books and writer for the New York Times, got his beginnings at Bennington College in Vermont, where he earned his bachelor's degree. The author is currently a professor of journalism at the University of California, according to his website.

Those who wish to launch careers as writers may benefit from attending Bennington, as the school offers a comprehensive curriculum taught by award-winning faculty. After attending the university, Pollan earned his master's degree and then published his first book, Second Nature: A Gardener's Education. He then went on to produce A Place of My Own, The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World, The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals and In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto.

Each book won him critical accolades, and he has received the Reuters World Conservation Union Global Awards in environmental journalism, the James Beard Foundation Awards for best magazine series in 2003 and the Genesis Award from the American Humane Association, according to his website.

Pollan is also a contributing writer for the New York Times Magazine and a former executive editor for Harper's Magazine, the school reports.
